Deep beneath the Canadian Shield, ancient rocks are naturally producing hydrogen gas — continuously and in large quantities. Scientists say this could be the clean energy source the world has been waiting for.
While most hydrogen today is manufactured from natural gas (producing CO2), «white hydrogen» occurs naturally underground. Until recently, most geologists thought meaningful accumulations didn’t exist.
The Canadian discovery
Measurements from deep mine boreholes in Ontario showed hydrogen gas flowing continuously for years. The source? Ancient rocks rich in iron reacting with water — a process called serpentinization that splits water molecules and releases hydrogen.
Key findings:
- Flow rates were stable and sustained, not diminishing over time
- The geological formation could hold vast reserves
- The hydrogen is naturally carbon-free
«This changes the conversation about hydrogen. It’s not just something we make — it’s something the Earth makes, and it may be abundant,» said the lead geologist.
If similar formations exist globally, natural hydrogen could become a major pillar of the clean energy transition — requiring no manufacturing, no carbon emissions, and minimal processing.
